artikulation binary beats are boring. for the past 5 years i've been working with nicolas bougaïeff on exploring polytemporality; multiple tempi in one track. it's difficult because of certain technical standards (ugh global midi). there will be a complex clock source for this in eurorack format soon[1], but i wanted something more simple and easy, which i could use in the daw. making it as if you're bending time, without actually skewing time nor going off the grid. think ghost sidechaining, with whatever groove you like. how to get started with artikulation: first get some audio material running. i find that it's best to use it with drum loops but also with dense drones. then drop the artikulation plugin on the track and start moving the vertical faders, which alter the rhythm. i would first use /4 and /2 to see what it does to the sounds, more straight, but then soon you would want to change the curve and skew it, that's the xy envelope control on the left. now where it gets more fun is when you start using polyrhythms using the tuplet menu on the rightmost fader. you can select various tuplets there and that's where things get funky. it's really fun putting a tuplet on something which is very straight so you can kind of make it sound as if it goes off the grid. make dilla proud and give your beat some well deserved swing and accents. you can also bend the whole rhythm you've created, kind of like rubato style, by dragging the dot in the top visualisation. stretch the rhythm you imposed on your rhythm sideways. the whole thing has auto gain so you don't have to be afraid of it blowing up when you push it more. just keep in mind that auto gain can never be perfect so it's not really loudness matched but at least it tries to stay within the clipping ranges without using clipping. you can also apply your rhythm to longer or short durations of time. a bar of 4 beats is the starting point but you can create rhythms for longer arcs or single beats too. people tend to confuse polymeter with polyrhythm, and i can tell you this is about meters. bottom right corner of the visualisation; clicking/dragging on this will cycle through the eight different lengths and you'll notice that the lower the faster it goes through the cycle. here it's also fun taking the uneven ones for more funk. i considered calling it wavejumper, one of my favourite drexciya tracks, but actually only one person so far guess the reference to ligeti right. did you?
